SpaceX is reportedly negotiating a $40 billion debt package to fund the acquisition of Nvidia AI hardware. The company plans to secure $10 billion from banks and raise an additional $30 billion through the investment-grade debt market. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the financing arrangement, with Pimco also involved in discussions. The transaction is anticipated to close in 2027.
If the funds are allocated to Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, estimated at $8 million per unit, the capital could cover approximately 5,000 racks. This configuration would include roughly 360,000 Nvidia Rubin AI accelerators. It remains uncertain whether this $40 billion represents the total compute budget for xAI in 2027 or if additional spending is planned.
The scale of existing infrastructure remains significant. Elon Musk recently stated that the Colossus 2 cluster currently utilizes 110,000 Nvidia GB200 accelerators and 440,000 GB300 devices. Apollo Global Management previously facilitated a $7 billion financing deal for xAI to support the development of the Colossus 2 data center near Memphis.
