Retail investors in South Korea lost approximately $250 million to fraud during the first half of 2026. This figure represents a 19.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The primary driver of these losses is the rise of stock tip chatrooms.

Police authorities investigated 3,506 cases related to these scams in the first six months of 2026, marking a 4.1% year-over-year increase. While the number of cases remained relatively stable, the total financial impact grew by nearly 20%, indicating that individual schemes are becoming more profitable for perpetrators.

The surge in fraud coincides with high volatility in the KOSPI index, which doubled early in 2026 before declining by as much as 44% from its peak on June 19. Scammers have shifted their focus from crypto and real estate to stock-related schemes, often impersonating financial influencers and using AI-generated tips.

In one specific instance, a criminal operation linked to Cambodia defrauded 59 victims of approximately ₩9.9 billion, or about $7.2 million, over two years. Despite the rising losses, legal experts note that the Financial Supervisory Service has not introduced significant regulatory measures to address the trend.
