Sony has transferred 419 extended reality (XR) patents to Meta, according to reports from ZDNET Korea. The agreement, confirmed in December 2025, includes 180 US patents and 239 patents filed in Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe. Data from the US Patent and Trademark Office shows that 43 of these patents were transferred between June and September.

The transferred portfolio covers core technologies for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, including head-mounted display systems. Industry observers suggest this move indicates Sony's intention to scale back its XR hardware operations. This follows reports that Sony previously declined Apple's request to increase production capacity for OLEDoS displays used in the Vision Pro headset.

Sony has historically led the development of OLEDoS, a micro-display technology that deposits OLED on silicon substrates. Despite its dominant position in this field, the company's refusal to expand production capacity for Apple previously signaled a shift in its hardware strategy. The number of patents undergoing ownership changes is expected to rise further.
