Sony has filed a patent for a PlayStation controller capable of reading payment information directly from credit cards, smartphones, or gift cards. The document, titled 'Video Game Controller-Driven Information Transfer,' was submitted in March 2025 and officially published on September 17, 2026.
The proposed system utilizes NFC, Bluetooth, or direct contact to facilitate transactions. Once the controller detects a payment method, it provides user feedback through light, sound, or vibration. This mechanism aims to eliminate the need for manual entry of card details or gift card codes during game purchases.
Beyond financial transactions, the patent outlines potential use cases such as transferring player IDs, adding guests to multiplayer sessions, or exporting media content to mobile devices. It also suggests a scenario where users could tap a phone to a controller at a retail demo station to purchase the full game.
The diagrams in the filing depict a controller resembling the existing DualSense model, rather than a new hardware device. While Sony continues to explore various controller concepts, including touchscreen designs and AI-assisted inputs, the company has not confirmed if this technology will be implemented in current or future consoles.
