The Sony Alpha a7R VI features a new 66.8-megapixel stacked sensor, marking a significant upgrade from the 61-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor found in its predecessor. The camera utilizes the BIONZ XR2 processor, which integrates a dedicated AI unit to handle advanced image processing tasks.

Performance improvements include a 5.6-fold increase in readout speed, reducing rolling shutter effects to 7-8 ms. The camera supports continuous shooting at 30 frames per second with a buffer capacity of 150 RAW files or 215 JPEGs. Additionally, the five-axis image stabilization system now offers up to 8.5 stops of compensation.

Video capabilities have been expanded to include 8K recording at 30 frames per second with a 1.2x crop, alongside 4K at 120p. All primary modes support 10-bit 4:2:2 color depth. A new Dual Gain Shooting mode is available for 4K 24/30p to improve shadow detail.

The device features a redesigned 9.44-million-dot OLED viewfinder with 0.9x magnification and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Ergonomic updates include a slightly lighter body weight of 713 grams, a deeper grip, and illuminated buttons for low-light operation. The camera retains a 3.2-inch 4-axis multi-angle display.

Connectivity options include two USB Type-C ports, a full-size HDMI Type A port, and dedicated 3.5mm audio jacks. The dual card slots are hybrid, supporting both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II memory cards. The camera also introduces a Pre-Capture function that saves up to 1 second of footage before the shutter is pressed.
