Solana has implemented the third stage of its SIMD-0525 proposal, reducing the target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This adjustment, which took effect on Friday, increases the frequency of block production by approximately 17%.
The network maintains the same overall transaction processing capacity, as each shorter slot now accommodates proportionally less data and computation. This change primarily benefits applications requiring high data freshness, such as oracles and automated market makers.
The duration of the four-slot control window for validators has decreased from 1.2 seconds to 1 second. Additionally, the network's epoch length, which is fixed at 432,000 slots, has compressed from approximately 36 hours to 30 hours.
The SIMD-0525 initiative has progressively reduced slot times from 400 milliseconds at genesis to the current 250 milliseconds. A final target of 200 milliseconds is planned, though no specific mainnet activation date has been set for this step.
Future implementation of the 200-millisecond target depends on maintaining stable block-skip rates. Separately, the network continues testing the Alpenglow consensus overhaul, which aims to reduce transaction finality times.
