The Anza team has initiated the activation of the Alpenglow consensus mechanism in the Solana public testnet. This update aims to reduce the block finalization time from approximately 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. The transition is governed by SIMD-0326, which was approved by 98.94% of the community in September 2025.
Alpenglow replaces the existing TowerBFT and Proof-of-History consensus mechanisms with a new system called Votor. Votor utilizes BLS-signature certificates to finalize blocks in a single round of voting under favorable conditions. The update is included in the Agave 4.3 release, which was recommended for general use by mainnet-beta validators on September 21.
The migration process involves a specific feature gate followed by a 5,000-slot window. During this period, the network will temporarily pause user transactions to transition to the new consensus state. Infrastructure providers, including indexers and trading platforms, are advised to update their systems to handle the new bank_id field introduced in Geyser and gRPC streams.
Before the public testnet launch, Alpenglow underwent over four months of testing in a dedicated community cluster. Following the testnet, the migration will proceed to the devnet and mainnet-beta environments. While the consensus mechanism will change, the SVM, transaction formats, fees, and account models remain unaffected for end users.
