Users of the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 have reported skin irritation, including redness and a burning sensation, where the device sensors contact the wrist. These complaints have appeared on various forums and the Reddit community.
One user noted that the discomfort persisted despite keeping the watch clean and ensuring the band was not too tight. The user observed the skin redness only after removing the device for charging, noting that the watch itself did not overheat during use.
The latest models feature upgraded health sensors, including an increased heart rate monitoring frequency of once every 5 seconds. The design now incorporates a circular arrangement of photodiodes and larger green LED lights to improve sensor performance.
While some users speculate that these hardware changes are linked to the skin issues, no direct evidence currently confirms this connection. Apple has previously addressed similar reports, noting that skin sensitivity can result from improper band fit or contact with sweat and soap.
Apple recommends that users maintain cleanliness of both the device and the skin, especially after exercise or exposure to substances like sunscreen. The company suggests adjusting the band tension to allow for proper airflow and to prevent friction or excessive pressure on the skin.
