The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club has formally requested that the Iowa Economic Development Authority impose strict conditions on any taxpayer-funded incentives for the Mesabi Metallics steel mill project. The organization emphasizes that public financial support must be tied to enforceable commitments rather than unconditional industry handouts.
The proposal includes requirements for the company to procure new renewable energy sources to power the facility. The Sierra Club insists that the costs associated with new power generation and electrical infrastructure must not be passed on to residential ratepayers. Additionally, the organization recommends the implementation of energy efficiency measures and the electrification of industrial equipment.
Environmental recommendations focus on pollution control, specifically limiting fugitive dust and utilizing zero-emissions trucks. The letter also suggests enclosed storage for raw materials and waste, alongside a transition strategy toward using 100% green or geologic hydrogen for the direct reduction process.
The Sierra Club also advocates for socioeconomic protections, including local hiring commitments and non-interference with union organizing efforts. The organization suggests establishing workforce training partnerships with local educational institutions to support the surrounding community and ensure fair labor practices throughout the project's development.
