Shopify has acquired the team behind Tailwind Labs, the creators of the popular CSS framework. Adam Wathan, the founder of Tailwind, stated that the team will join Shopify to ensure the long-term stability and maintenance of their open-source projects, including Tailwind CSS. The framework currently records over 110 million installations per week.

Under the new arrangement, the Tailwind team will assist Shopify merchants in designing custom storefronts and managing inventory. They will also focus on developing user interfaces for agentic commerce. Tailwind customers will retain access to existing products like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, although the company has stopped accepting new sign-ups.

Shopify has been integrating advanced features to support its growth, which included a 34% year-over-year revenue increase in the second quarter. Recent initiatives involve expanding B2B capabilities, launching local payment options in Mexico, and connecting its AI toolkit to external coding platforms to facilitate storefront development.

The company continues to attract significant investment, notably a $100 million stake from Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital in May. This investment reflects a strategic focus on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance commerce capabilities across the platform.
