Sheeternetes is a container orchestrator that uses spreadsheets as a control plane. The project has introduced a federation mechanism allowing two clusters—one on-premise using an Excel file and another in the cloud using Google Sheets—to function as a single system. This setup enables cross-cluster service discovery, resource pooling, and live migration without requiring inbound ports.
The networking component, Sheetwire, functions as a userspace TCP relay. It uses a Google Sheet as a transport layer, where each row represents a data frame. This design bypasses NAT and firewalls by relying solely on outbound HTTPS requests. Due to Google Sheets' write quota of approximately 60 requests per minute, the relay is optimized for low-bandwidth control-plane traffic rather than high-volume data transfer.
The federation includes a resource-stretching feature that treats nodes from both clusters as a unified pool. A bridge script distributes replicas based on available CPU capacity. Additionally, a migration tool supports a make-before-break approach, ensuring zero downtime during workload transfers between clusters. The system also features a WASM-based runtime that executes modules directly from spreadsheet cells.
The project is part of the Sheet-Native Computing Foundation (SNCF). The implementation requires Python 3, Google API client libraries, and the wasmtime runtime. While the networking has been tested between physical hosts, the developers note that the system is eventually consistent and intended for experimental use rather than production environments.
