Sensata Technologies has introduced the R290 P+T sensor, a device that combines pressure and temperature monitoring for electric vehicle thermal management systems using propane as a refrigerant. The component is designed for use in battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and other electrified platforms.

The sensor addresses the industry shift toward refrigerants with low global warming potential and no per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Since propane contains no fluorine, it avoids PFAS-related concerns. However, its A3 flammability classification requires strict leakage management, which the new sensor supports through a leakage-optimized design.

The integrated unit provides data necessary for managing HVAC and heat pump loops, which directly impacts energy efficiency and winter driving range. By measuring both pressure and temperature at the same location, the sensor enables accurate calculation of superheat and subcooling conditions for better diagnostics.

Technical specifications for the R290 P+T sensor include an accuracy rating better than 1% of full scale within its core operating range. The device features a fast temperature response time and offers multiple output options, including analog, LIN, or SENT, to suit various automotive system architectures.
