Hester Peirce, widely known as 'Crypto Mom,' officially stepped down from her role as an SEC commissioner on October 2, 2026. Her tenure at the agency began in January 2018, spanning both the Trump and Biden administrations. Although her term officially ended in June 2025, she continued to serve in a holdover capacity for over a year.

Following her departure, the SEC commission now consists of only two members, Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, both of whom are Republican appointees. No successor has been named to fill the vacant seat. Peirce announced her resignation on X on September 25, 2026, with the formal letter dated September 21.

During her time at the SEC, Peirce led the Crypto Task Force, which focused on token classification and staking guidance. Her tenure also saw the enactment of the GENIUS Act in 2025 and the introduction of a five-year innovation exemption allowing US stocks to trade on-chain via automated market makers.

Peirce previously worked as an SEC staff member from 2000 to 2008. Starting in November 2026, she will transition to academia as an associate professor at the Regent University School of Law. Market participants are now monitoring the commission's future approach to token regulation and the implementation of existing innovation exemptions.
