Hester Peirce, a commissioner at the US Securities and Exchange Commission, has formally submitted her resignation. Her departure from the agency is scheduled for October 2. Peirce, who earned the nickname Crypto Mom for her advocacy of clear regulatory frameworks for digital assets, served on the commission for approximately eight years.
During her tenure, Peirce also held the position of director for the agency’s Crypto Task Force, a role she assumed on February 4, 2025. Her official term expired in June 2025, but she continued her service under the provision allowing commissioners to remain for up to 18 months after their term ends if no replacement is appointed.
Following her departure, Peirce plans to transition to academia. In November, she is set to join Regent University in Virginia as an associate professor. She will focus on areas including federal litigation, securities regulation, and digital assets. The university announced these plans earlier in May.
The commission currently operates with Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda. It remains uncertain when Peirce’s seat will be filled, as the vacancy left by former commissioner Caroline Crenshaw in January 2025 has not yet been addressed by the administration.
