Samsung Electronics is accelerating the construction of its 2nm chip fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas. The push is driven by an agreement with Tesla to manufacture 2nm chips, including the AI5 and AI6 models, at this facility.
The first plant is expected to begin trial production in late September or early October, with mass production starting in 2027. Initial capacity is projected to be 50,000 silicon wafers per month.
A second facility in Taylor is also progressing. Construction will start by the end of this year, with mass production targeted for the end of the decade. Zero-cycle construction work is already underway, and negotiations with equipment suppliers are ongoing.
Additionally, Samsung has opened a research center in Yokohama, Japan, focusing on AI chip packaging technologies. The company invested $257 million in the center, with over half of the amount covered by Japanese government subsidies.
The Yokohama center will house a test laboratory and employ 95 researchers from Japan and South Korea. Samsung currently collaborates with more than 50 Japanese companies to produce advanced AI infrastructure chips, including HBM memory.
