Samsung SDI is set to resume investment in its US subsidiary, Synergy Cells, following a full buyout of the entity from General Motors. The company plans to inject several trillion KRW into the project to revitalize operations at the New Carlisle facility in Indiana.

The updated strategy shifts the plant's focus toward the production of LFP batteries for energy storage systems (ESS). Samsung SDI intends to install one to two production lines, each with an annual capacity exceeding 10 GWh. Commercial production is now scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028.

Industry reports suggest that Tesla may emerge as a primary customer for the new LFP battery output. This move takes priority over the development of a second facility for StarPlus Energy, a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis, which currently handles US ESS demand.

StarPlus Energy is simultaneously reconfiguring its existing production lines. The company is converting its current NCA battery manufacturing capacity to support LFP technology to better align with evolving market requirements. Meanwhile, 80 percent of the StarPlus Energy plant's 2029 capacity is already booked.
