Samsung and Verizon conducted a field test during an international soccer event in Texas to generate real-time crowd density heatmaps using 5G signals. The experiment focused on Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology, which allows wireless networks to perceive environmental changes by analyzing signal variations.
The test utilized a CBRS radio unit mounted on a mobile Verizon Cell-On-Wheels station, operating on a 40 MHz spectrum. The system processes signal data to visualize crowd distribution without identifying specific individuals, addressing privacy concerns regarding network-based sensing.
The resulting heatmaps update in real time, enabling event organizers to manage resources and security teams to monitor high-density areas. Visitors can also use this data to locate less crowded facilities, such as food stalls or exits, to reduce wait times.
Verizon CTO Yago Tenorio noted that investments in software-driven vRAN infrastructure enabled the testing of these 6G concepts. Samsung views ISAC as a foundational element for future 6G networks, demonstrating its viability in dynamic, real-world environments.
