OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the risks associated with artificial intelligence during the Salesforce Dreamforce conference. He stated that a certain number of incidents involving new technologies are inevitable as they continue to be deployed.
Altman emphasized that the industry's primary focus should be on establishing a robust culture of reporting and learning from these failures. He cited the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board as examples of organizations that maintain safety through rigorous investigation.
The executive acknowledged public concerns regarding AI development, including fears about systems losing control or the concentration of power within a few laboratories. Altman noted that these societal anxieties are entirely valid and understandable.
The discussion follows recent public criticism from former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Hilton. Hilton expressed concerns that the ongoing competitive race in the AI sector could lead to the development of systems that pose an existential threat to humanity.
