S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new risk assessment framework for digital asset lending vaults. The system evaluates products across six specific areas, including portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator and blockchain risks, as well as protocol and governance security.
The agency clarified that these assessments are not credit ratings and do not evaluate potential yields. According to analyst Lisa Schroeer, a significant weakness in any single factor can limit the overall assessment score, as the framework accounts for multiple potential points of failure.
The sector has seen significant growth, with total deposits reaching approximately $10 billion in September, compared to $1.5 billion two years prior. S&P Global plans to release its first assessments in future updates, though specific vaults for initial review remain undisclosed.
The market for these vaults has expanded through offerings from platforms like Telegram’s Wallet and Kraken. In May, Kraken’s Bitcoin yield vault attracted $30 million from 4,000 wallets within 10 hours. The model has since extended to tokenized securities, including Nvidia and ETF-linked assets.
The sector faces security and regulatory challenges. In August, the Term Finance protocol lost an estimated $8.5 million due to a governance exploit. Additionally, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce noted in July that certain vaults may fall under federal securities laws depending on their operational structure.
