The Russian telecommunications sector is entering a phase of rapid transformation, according to Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadaev. Speaking at the Digital Solutions forum, he noted that the industry faces significant regulatory, infrastructural, and technological shifts, including the integration of artificial intelligence.
A primary focus for the sector is the development of domestic equipment for 5G networks. While Russia lacked native solutions for modern mobile networks in 2022, the industry has since successfully deployed domestic LTE equipment in commercial networks.
The next objective is the transition to 5G technology. Shadaev stated that the first Russian-made 5G solutions are expected to arrive in October. Manufacturers are now tasked with scaling from individual prototypes to full-scale production of 5G infrastructure within a limited timeframe.
In related developments, MegaFon recently conducted a test of Russian satellite internet. The company successfully connected a standard base station to a network using satellites developed by Bureau 1440.
