The Russian Ministry of Finance has initiated salary payments in digital rubles for its staff. This transition began on a voluntary basis for employees starting October 1, 2026. The ministry has not disclosed the specific number of participants or the total payroll amount processed through this new system.

The implementation utilizes infrastructure tested during federal budget spending trials conducted in 2025. During those tests, the government disbursed approximately 16 million digital rubles, equivalent to $192 245. The project is a joint effort between the Bank of Russia and the Ministry of Finance to integrate the digital currency into the national budget process.

Russia officially launched its central bank digital currency on September 1, 2026, involving major banks and retail companies. The digital ruble serves as a complement to the traditional fiat currency. Development of the digital asset began in 2021, though the European Union imposed sanctions on the currency in April 2025 citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
