Recent reports indicate that Russia is facing challenges in fuel distribution following successful drone strikes on its oil infrastructure. Data shows that 24 out of the 33 largest refineries in the country have been targeted, leaving domestic refining capacity at 70% of local demand.
These logistical difficulties have led to fuel shortages, restrictions on sales in various regions, and a temporary ban on gasoline exports. Consequently, the country has observed a shift in consumer behavior regarding vehicle purchases over the last three months.
Between June and August 2026, sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Russia reached 26 543 units. This figure represents a 118% increase compared to the 12 187 units sold during the same period in the previous year.
Despite this growth, electric vehicles currently account for approximately 6% of the total automotive market in Russia, with around 400 000 total cars sold during the same three-month window. This remains below the global average of roughly 25%.
