Rubrik Inc. has introduced Apache Iceberg Protection, a new backup and recovery feature for Apache Iceberg tables hosted on Amazon Web Services. The tool addresses limitations in native AWS tooling, where snapshots are metadata pointers that can be lost if a table is deleted, encrypted by ransomware, or overwritten by AI agents.

The new capability copies both the underlying data files and the table metadata. This allows for automated re-registration of tables in the AWS Glue Data Catalog, enabling immediate querying via Amazon Athena, Apache Spark, or Trino. Backups are immutable and can be stored in a customer's own AWS account or the Rubrik Cloud Vault.

The system supports petabyte-scale tables by capturing only the latest compacted snapshots after an initial full copy. Users can choose their preferred S3 storage class for backups. Additionally, the platform allows for on-demand backups before schema changes and supports restores to isolated branches for validation before production deployment.

This release continues Rubrik's expansion into cloud-native workloads. Earlier this year, the company introduced Cloud SQL protection and governance for Gemini agents on Google Cloud. According to Chief Product Officer Anneka Gupta, the new offering extends Rubrik's data protection policies to cover the entire lakehouse environment.
