Former Apple and Google developer Robbie Tilton has released Compositor, an open-source graphic editor. The application is positioned as a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop, featuring a lightweight distribution size of approximately 8 MB. Upon installation, the software occupies about 14 MB of disk space.
As of September 21, 2026, the editor is available in version 1.1.8 exclusively for macOS. Users require macOS 26 Tahoe and Xcode 26 or newer to build the source code. The project is hosted on GitHub, where users can download the DMG file or the source code to modify features.
Compositor includes core image editing tools such as layers, masks, transparency, and transformation options like scaling and rotation. It supports brushes with adjustable settings, a clone stamp tool, gradients, and text. The software also provides image correction algorithms, including curves, exposure, and saturation adjustments.
The interface allows users to open multiple images in tabs. The application supports importing JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and TIFF formats, with export capabilities for JPEG. To facilitate the transition from other software, the developer implemented a system of keyboard shortcuts similar to those used in Adobe Photoshop.
