Tech enthusiast GameRig repurposed a discarded Samsung Galaxy A90 5G into a functional mini-PC. The project utilized a smartphone with a damaged screen, which was acquired for $30. The device features a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of internal storage.
The transformation relies on the Samsung DeX mode, which provides a desktop-like interface when connected to external peripherals. The creator disassembled the phone, keeping the motherboard, power board, and battery. A custom 3D-printed case with a volume of 0.7 liters houses all internal components, including the original cooling system and a USB hub.
The resulting mini-PC achieves over 400 FPS in Minecraft. However, the design has faced criticism from the community regarding its thermal management. The current enclosure lacks ventilation holes, and users have expressed concerns about placing the battery in such a confined space, suggesting an external power supply as a safer alternative.
