Newer Bitcoin whale investors are currently holding unrealized gains exceeding $9 billion, marking the highest level recorded by CryptoQuant since 2016. This data specifically concerns short-term holder (STH) whales, defined as wallets holding coins for less than six months.
On September 4, the aggregate unrealized profit for this cohort reached a multi-year high of $9.07 billion. However, this figure dropped by 17% the following day as the BTC/USD price declined by just under 2%, highlighting the sensitivity of these investors to spot price movements.
The cost basis for STH whales is currently near $69,000. CryptoQuant warns that further price declines may trigger selling pressure from these speculative investors, who are historically the fastest to take profits when available.
On-chain data shows increasing inflows to exchanges since May. On September 2, Bitcoin reserves on Binance reached 691,658 BTC, the highest level since November 2024. While CryptoQuant describes whale participation in these inflows as relatively contained, the high reserve base suggests that a breakout above $83,000 will require strong demand from ETFs and organic buyers.
