According to the PYMNTS Intelligence report, 76% of financial institutions already provide access to the RTP network. Among those that have not yet enabled the service, 92% expect to do so within two years, while 95% of institutions without the FedNow Service plan to enable it in the same timeframe.
Modernization is hindered by several factors: 53% of financial institutions identify manual-intensive internal processes as the primary obstacle, 52% cite legacy technology, and 47% point to siloed payment systems. Integration with core and treasury systems, implementation costs, and 24/7 staffing requirements are also listed as practical challenges.
To address these issues, 35% of financial institutions are implementing centralized third-party payment hubs, and 32% are adding rail-specific tools to existing systems. These investments allow for transaction routing across multiple networks without requiring separate technology stacks for each rail.
Business customers emphasize the value of operational visibility, with 28% identifying payment tracking and immediate confirmation as leading benefits. Consequently, 88% of financial institutions rate the return on investment from instant B2B payments as high or very high, including 82% of those that have not yet enabled an instant payment rail.
