At the 2026 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm announced an 8-year kernel update support plan for its flagship Elite series processors. This initiative aims to address the technical limitations that previously hindered the software lifecycle of Android devices.
Kernel updates are essential for smartphone manufacturers to deliver new Android versions and security patches. By extending this support, Qualcomm enables OEMs to potentially offer up to 7 years of system updates for their flagship handsets.
Several manufacturers have already committed to long-term support. Samsung and Google provide 7 years of updates for their flagship lineups. Honor offers similar support for models like the Magic 9, while Motorola has pledged 7 years for its Razr Fold and Signature series.
Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm's mobile business, stated that the company intends to ensure devices maintain their value for users over an extended period.
