The company Qr Switch LLC acquired two patents related to QR code authentication in January 2025. These patents, originally filed by inventor Wesley John Woodville in 2011 and 2012, describe systems for interacting with electronic displays via barcodes.
Following the acquisition, Qr Switch LLC initiated lawsuits against Telegram, Walmart, and Toyota in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The company alleges that these entities infringed upon its patented technology for QR code-based login processes.
Reports suggest that Walmart may have reached a settlement with the plaintiff to resolve the dispute. Industry observers anticipate that other corporate defendants might also choose to settle rather than proceed with litigation to avoid public scrutiny and legal costs.
Wesley John Woodville holds 63 patents across various jurisdictions, with the earliest dating back to 2005. His portfolio includes technologies related to blockchain, geolocation, and pedestrian safety, with his QR-related patents cited 63 times by companies like Apple and Google.
