The new Relapse jailbreak for PlayStation 5 utilizes browser and kernel exploits to provide read and write access to the kernel. This development allows users to run homebrew software and emulators, including those for Nintendo Switch games, on consoles running firmware up to version 13.60.

Despite the expanded compatibility, the utility of the exploit is limited by Sony's firmware update cycle. Newer game titles and updates are increasingly requiring firmware version 14.00 or higher. For instance, while the disc version of Marvel's Wolverine functions on firmware 13.60, the digital edition's latest update requires version 14.00.

Users face a trade-off between maintaining the jailbreak and accessing the latest software. Updating the console to meet the requirements of new games effectively disables the Relapse exploit. This creates a recurring cycle where gamers must choose between running custom software or staying current with official game releases.
