The Linux client for Zoom, specifically version 7.1.5, has been identified as silently accessing clipboard data in the background. Users discovered that the application reads all information written to the system clipboard during X11 sessions, even when the Zoom window is not in focus.
This behavior differs from previous iterations, such as version 6.6, which did not exhibit this activity. The current version utilizes the XFIXES extension to monitor changes in clipboard ownership. Testing indicates that disabling the 'Allow remote control users to share clipboard' setting in web account preferences does not stop this silent data access.
The issue affects specific workflows, including terminal-based scripts like xclip loops. Security concerns arise because users frequently copy sensitive information, such as passwords, to their clipboards. The continuous background monitoring poses a potential risk of data exposure for the platform's users.
