Porsche has officially confirmed that the 718 Boxster and Cayman models will not return with internal combustion engines. During the 2026 Capital Markets Day, the company outlined its Sportwagenschmiede 35 strategy, which focuses exclusively on electric powertrains for these specific sports cars.

The automaker clarified that the combustion-engine versions of the 718 were never formally approved for production, despite earlier speculation regarding a potential flat-six engine option. The electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman are currently scheduled for a full year of production in 2028, with a public reveal expected next year.

While the 718 line shifts to electric, Porsche continues to invest in combustion and plug-in hybrid technologies for other segments. The company plans to launch a new combustion and plug-in hybrid SUV in 2028 to replace the original Macan, while the 911 model remains excluded from the all-electric transition plans.

Additionally, Porsche is preparing to debut the Mission S concept on October 15. This vehicle will serve as a preview for a future hypercar positioned above the 911. Meanwhile, Audi is also developing a two-door electric roadster for 2027, which will share a platform within the Volkswagen Group, likely linked to the electric 718 architecture.
