Polygon Foundation is preparing to enable a permissionless burn of 100 million POL tokens. CEO Sandeep Nailwal confirmed that the relevant contracts are currently active on the testnet. The mechanism will transition to the mainnet following final approval from the Security Council.
The tokens designated for destruction are currently held in a base-fee collector contract containing 121 million POL. This initiative will allow any user with a wallet to trigger the removal of approximately 83% of the contract balance in a single transaction.
The process follows the logic of the EIP-1559 model, which Polygon integrated in early 2022. Following the initial event, the network plans to conduct additional burns on a quarterly basis, linking the supply reduction directly to network usage.
Since January 2026, Polygon has maintained a net deflationary state. Between January and June of this year, the network burned 107 million POL while minting 105 million. During peak periods, daily burn rates have reached between one and three million POL.
The network reported annual revenue of $24.5 million. Its infrastructure currently supports a throughput of up to 5,000 transactions per second, ensuring a consistent supply of fees for the burn mechanism as long as user activity remains stable.
