Taiwan-based PieceMakers, a designer of custom memory solutions, is currently valued at approximately $1.4 billion. The company, founded in 2006, is transitioning its business model from direct product sales to custom design services, IP licensing, and royalties. Revenue from its AI custom design unit grew from roughly 4% in 2024 to nearly 40% in the first half of 2026.
The company specializes in memory technologies like HBLL and HiBaLL, which utilize 3D-stacked DRAM. PieceMakers focuses on bonding DRAM stacks directly onto processors using hybrid bonding technology to improve bandwidth and reduce latency. This approach aims to provide an alternative to traditional HBM solutions for edge AI devices, with mass production programs targeted for 2027.
Nanya Technology remains the largest shareholder of PieceMakers with a 33.96% stake. In August 2025, Nanya also formed a joint venture with Etron Technology, capitalized at TWD 500 million, to develop custom high-bandwidth memory for edge AI. Both companies rely on Formosa Advanced Technologies for packaging, specifically for through-silicon-via and die-stacking processes.
The industry is currently exploring various memory architectures for AI accelerators. While major players like Samsung and SK hynix are developing their own HBM roadmaps, PieceMakers positions itself as an IP provider. The company expects to finalize its first volume programs by 2027, leveraging a design-fee model to mitigate risks associated with wafer-on-wafer production yields.
