Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has broadened its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program in California. The initiative enables electric vehicle owners to utilize their cars as mobile batteries for home backup power or to supply energy back to the grid during peak demand periods.

The utility company updated its list of eligible products to include vehicles from four additional manufacturers: Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan. These join existing supported models from Ford, Tesla, and General Motors. The program provides financial incentives for residents to install bidirectional charging hardware.

PG&E also expanded its network of approved partners by adding PowerFlex, a commercial solar and charging provider, and Bidirectional Energy, which offers software for connecting EVs and utility programs. The company notes that bidirectional charging remains in an early commercial phase, requiring specific hardware and vehicle combinations.

Beyond residential offerings, the utility is promoting V2G technology for commercial use. PG&E currently supports the transition to electric school bus fleets equipped with bidirectional capabilities in the Fremont, Oakland, and San Francisco school districts.
