The Ministry of Economy and Finance of Peru confirmed on September 14 that its official X account was compromised. Attackers used the platform to promote a fraudulent token called HYLO, claiming that allocations were available for citizens ahead of a supposed launch on September 25.
The ministry stated that the posts were unauthorized and advised the public to ignore all content published during the breach. Security teams took control of the account and removed the fraudulent messages. The government has not reported any financial losses resulting from the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed how the attackers gained access to the account or identified those responsible. The incident follows a trend of compromised government accounts in Latin America used to push crypto schemes. Officials noted a rise in cyber fraud throughout 2026.
