The project will focus on identifying future battlefield requirements and the specific weapons or technologies that military personnel may utilize in upcoming conflicts.
The project is led by Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The team will operate under the guidance of US Department of Defense Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael, with additional contributions from experts in academia and policy sectors.
The team is required to submit their findings and actionable solutions within a 120-day timeframe. The primary objective of these recommendations is to accelerate the development, testing, and deployment of advanced technologies to ensure the continued military dominance of the United States.
In addition to Project Meridian, Hegseth announced the creation of an Autonomous Operations Command. This new body is tasked with streamlining the research, development, and deployment of autonomous systems and drone technologies for the US military.
