The Pentagon has launched the Meridian project, a 120-day initiative focused on defining the future of warfare and identifying necessary military technologies. The project is led by Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, under the guidance of Chief Technology Officer Amir Michael.

The research will evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems on future combat environments, including unconventional domains like underground spaces and the moon. The team is tasked with delivering a report that outlines specific proposals for the development, testing, and deployment of advanced military hardware.

The initiative has sparked discussions regarding potential conflicts of interest, as both Musk and Luckey lead companies that currently supply defense technology to the U.S. government. Critics note that the project's recommendations could directly influence future procurement decisions for their own products, though the Pentagon has not yet disclosed conflict management protocols.

Alongside the Meridian project, the Pentagon announced the creation of the Autonomous Warfare Command. This new body is designed to accelerate the integration of drones, robotics, and autonomous weapons into the U.S. Joint Force, reflecting a broader shift toward integrating commercial technology from Silicon Valley into defense infrastructure.
