Pakistan is currently pursuing two separate energy initiatives: capturing methane from landfills and utilizing surplus electricity for Bitcoin mining. Despite reports circulating on social media, these projects remain distinct and have not been integrated into a single operation.
In May 2025, the Pakistan Crypto Council, headed by Bilal Bin Saqib, announced plans to dedicate approximately 2,000 MW of excess power from coal-fired plants to Bitcoin mining and AI data centers. These power plants are currently operating at about 15% of their total capacity.
Simultaneously, authorities are developing methane capture projects at major sites like Mehmood Booti, a 43-acre landfill containing 13 million tons of waste. The project involves an investment of approximately PKR 5 billion, or $17.86 million.
The landfill initiatives, led by the Ravi Urban Development Authority and the Lahore Waste Management Company, aim to generate 100,000 tons of carbon credits annually. The target revenue for these environmental projects is expected to exceed PKR 2 billion per year.
