The OpenClaw team has released version 2026.9.5, which is now available on npm. The software is self-hostable and requires Node 24.16+ or 26.1+ to function. This update introduces atomic updates, plugin hot reloading, conversation sharing, and expanded GPT Live capabilities.

Maintainer Jason Sy noted that previous update processes often led to total system failure, leaving no agents online for repairs. The new architecture ensures that a functional agent remains active during the upgrade to assist with diagnostics. The release also includes a new issue reporting button for users.

The developers warn that atomic updates are limited to supported paths and cannot revert database migrations. Users must maintain verified backups, as the private validation copy is not a substitute. AI-driven repair features require user confirmation and operate with a 30-second timeout using the user's own tokens.

This version modifies the conversation database regardless of archiving settings, making downgrades dependent on matching older builds and backups. Additionally, the release adds a FreeBSD CLI installation route. Users can update via the command line or install the package directly through npm.
