OpenAI is focusing on specialized AI solutions for chip design, life sciences, and financial services. The company is exploring a pricing model based on business outcomes rather than actual model usage to meet corporate demands for clear returns on investment.
The company has already applied its own AI to chip development. Using proprietary models, OpenAI completed the 'tape-out' of the Jalapeno chip within nine months, finalizing the design for production.
To compete with open-source and open-weight models, OpenAI reduced the price of its low-cost Luna model by 80%, which led to a ten-fold increase in usage. Sarah Friar noted that deploying Luna can be cheaper than running Chinese open-source models like GLM 5.3 in cloud environments.
The company's enterprise business is growing rapidly. Between June and July, enterprise revenue grew by 32%, while overall annualized revenue increased by 20%. By mid-year, enterprise and consumer revenue split roughly equally, reaching this goal earlier than the original year-end target.
