OpenAI has selected AMD EPYC Turin CPUs to serve as hosts for its custom Jalapeño ASICs. The decision to pair these components was driven by a strategy to minimize technical risk and leverage the established maturity of the Turin platform.

According to OpenAI hardware leadership, the Nvidia Vera CPU was considered but ultimately bypassed for this deployment. The team noted that Vera, as a standalone product, currently lacks the level of maturity required for this specific program compared to the Turin architecture.

Practical considerations also influenced the choice, as Turin chips utilize a socketed design, whereas the Nvidia Vera is board-mounted. While chip swapping is rare in server environments, the socketed nature of Turin offers greater flexibility for maintenance and servicing.

OpenAI continues to maintain a diverse fleet of hardware and explores various technologies, including Arm-based solutions. While the company is listed among those evaluating Nvidia's Vera, the current Jalapeño deployment prioritizes the reliability of the x86-based Turin platform.
