In May 2026, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis stated that AGI could be achieved by approximately 2030. Nvidia founder Jensen Huang recently suggested that generative models have already met the functional criteria for AGI in many applications.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that the current version of GPT will meet AGI criteria by the end of 2026. Mark Chen, a senior researcher at OpenAI, stated that the path to AGI is 80% complete.

OpenAI defines AGI in its charter as a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans in most economically significant activities. In 2023, internal discussions between OpenAI and Microsoft suggested a financial benchmark for AGI: generating $100 billion in profit.

OpenAI has not reported a profit since its inception, recording multi-billion dollar losses instead. The company does not plan to reach profitability before 2030.

The focus for current AI development is on automating tasks in software development, scientific research, legal analysis, and finance. These sectors represent tens of trillions of dollars in labor costs.
