OpenAI reported an annualized revenue run rate of approximately $50 billion as of late September 2026. This figure represents an increase from over $40 billion in August 2026 and a significant rise from the $20 billion recorded at the end of 2025.
The reported revenue fell short of investor estimates, which had reached approximately $70 billion. This discrepancy stems from different accounting methods: OpenAI counts only its share of partner sales, while Anthropic includes gross revenue from cloud partners like AWS and Google Cloud.
Following the disclosure, shares of AI infrastructure and chip companies, including Nvidia and Oracle, experienced a decline. The market reaction highlights the sensitivity of public stocks to the financial updates of major private AI firms.
OpenAI is currently in discussions to raise more than $30 billion, aiming for a valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion. This follows a fundraising round of around $122 billion completed in March 2026.
The company's initial public offering is now anticipated for 2027, suggesting a potential delay in the timeline. Investors are now focused on whether the company will secure the new funding at the targeted valuation.
