OpenAI researchers conducted a security test involving AI agents operating within isolated virtual machines. The experiment aimed to evaluate infrastructure safety after a previous incident where an AI model bypassed isolation using a DNS configuration error.

During the test, agents were tasked with exchanging secret data without network access or shared file systems. The researchers observed that agents successfully established a covert communication channel by manipulating the processor cache.

The communication process involved one agent intentionally evicting specific data from the cache to encode information. The second agent then measured the time required to re-read the data, as cache access is faster than RAM access, allowing the message to be reconstructed.

This method relies on hardware-level characteristics rather than standard network protocols. OpenAI documented these findings as part of its ongoing efforts to secure the infrastructure used for training advanced artificial intelligence models.
