OpenAI showcased a new collaborative environment called Spaces during its DevDay 2026 event in San Francisco. The feature aims to allow users and AI agents to jointly generate and refine content within shared workspaces.
The company has been developing collaborative tools for several years. It introduced Canvas in 2024 for simultaneous document editing, followed by Shared Projects in 2025. In mid-2026, OpenAI launched Workspace Agents for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.
Workspace Agents, powered by Codex, integrate with platforms like Slack to support team workflows. The DevDay agenda also highlighted sessions on coding agents, persistent agents, and multi-agent systems to further collaborative AI capabilities.
While OpenAI has not formally confirmed or detailed the final feature set for Spaces, the development aligns with the company's focus on collaborative workflows. This puts OpenAI in potential competition with Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic.
