OpenAI is set to introduce its new AI agent, Dots, at the Dev Day event on September 29, 2026. The product is designed to operate autonomously on dedicated virtual machines, allowing it to function in the background across multiple applications and services simultaneously.

Dots features proactive interaction, customizable 3D avatars, and integrated secure password storage. The system is built to manage emails, calls, and messaging autonomously, acting as a digital assistant that does not require manual prompts to surface information.

The launch follows the release of Meta’s Muse agent on September 8, 2026. Muse reached approximately 730 000 downloads in its first five days and later exceeded 2,5 million, surpassing ChatGPT in the US iOS free app charts.

While Meta leverages its existing ecosystem across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for distribution, OpenAI aims to differentiate Dots through its sandboxed virtual machine architecture. This approach provides isolation for agent instances compared to shared cloud environments.
