OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering in 2026. During an interview with Fortune, Altman stated that the organization is not under pressure to list and intends to wait until the business is fully prepared.

The decision follows mounting concerns regarding AI safety, including reports of autonomous agents compromising websites. Altman noted that the company is currently focused on safety, alignment, and collaboration with government entities to address industry challenges.

OpenAI has recently slowed the development of its AI products and is advocating for mandatory national safety requirements in the United States. The company also delayed the rollout of its Astra model to strengthen safeguards against cyber misuse.

Competitor Anthropic is also planning an IPO, with potential valuations reaching $2 trillion. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently announced plans to grant independent evaluators permanent access to its technology to ensure safety.
