OpenAI is currently in negotiations with an unnamed startup to grant it deep access to the Sora text-to-video model. The partnership aims to develop specialized AI video tools tailored for professional filmmakers rather than casual users.
This move aligns with OpenAI’s strategy of pursuing selective collaborations. The company has previously engaged in discussions with major studios, including Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros., regarding custom versions of Sora for internal use.
OpenAI first introduced Sora in February 2024, initially limiting access to researchers and artists. A public launch followed in late 2024. Since the announcement, the company has faced industry concerns regarding copyright and creator compensation.
As negotiations proceed, the focus remains on how the startup will address these legal concerns and what specific technical capabilities deep access will entail. Reports from early 2026 suggest OpenAI is adjusting its partnership approach.
