OpenAI has introduced Dots, a new category of autonomous AI agents powered by the GPT-6 Astra model. Unlike traditional chatbots, these agents operate continuously in the background, maintaining their own cloud-based computing environment, browser access, and memory of user preferences to manage ongoing tasks.
The agents can integrate with over 4,000 applications via the company's plugin ecosystem. Users can access Dots through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, with SMS support planned for the future. The rollout is currently available to Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, while enterprise, education, and healthcare clients can access the beta via administrator settings.
Dots are designed to handle complex workflows, such as monitoring software bugs, updating data analysis, or processing invoices. Each agent functions within an isolated cloud environment. For sensitive operations, OpenAI has implemented a multi-layered review system that requires human approval for actions that could alter accounts or share private information.
The company is also developing specialized Dots for corporate use, which will feature unique identities and direct access to internal systems. Microsoft is collaborating with OpenAI to integrate these agents into the Agent 365 enterprise management suite. This move marks a strategic shift from interactive chatbots to software capable of managing end-to-end workflows.
